Back pain is mostly experienced by each one of us. Whether the back pain is chronic or acute, it makes us suffer a lot. There is a specific type of back pain, referred as sciatica. It arises from or along the sciatic nerve region. This sciatic nerve pain arises from the lower back and extends till the down through each leg.
Pain appear on one side alone in sciatic nerve pain patients. The causes of this sciatic nerve pain are the pinched nerve, herniated discs and bone spurs. The pinched nerve is seen in some pregnant women, which is very common since the foetus position turns upside down.
This sciatic nerve pain gets resolved in a six week period, but till then the pain experienced by the affected person will be really horrible.
The treatment name is tennis ball therapy, it is used to heal this nerve pain effectively and it can be practised at home itself. This therapy best works on the piriformis muscle thereby helping out in reducing the lower back pain.
TENNIS BALL THERAPY
- Place the ball where you feel the pain starts in that area.
- One or two balls can be used in this therapy.
- The Larger area can be covered when used with two balls.
- Initially, you can start up with a single ball.
- Now you have to move your body slowly, thus the ball moves around the muscle.
- Kindly find the tender spots.
- You have to compress the tennis ball on these tender spots for 15-20 seconds.
- Try to do this therapy few times in a day. It will help to resolve the pain.
Alternative method in healing sciatic nerve pain
Try to include spicy foods in your diet, especially capsicum, chilli peppers, habaneros and jalapenos. It is a simple remedy to reduce the sciatic nerve pain. Follow it regularly during pain time, it will help to reduce the inflammation and treat the lower back pain efficiently.
NOTE- Sciatic nerve pain is not a disease it’s a pain that’s it. If this sciatic nerve pain arises due to herniated disc or bone spur that time you need immediate medical attention. But a pinched nerve or muscle sciatic nerve pain can be treated well with this wonderful tennis ball therapy.

Back in 2011, I had disc bulge surgery. But not after I spent the year being correctly diagnosed, sufficiently medicated, 2 nerve root injections that didn’t help one little bit. (I imagine my behaviour toward the still learning Doctors created career changes for them) and eventually surgery. An exercise to prolong pain and medications would have been a great relief.
