THE IMPORTANCE OF pH BALANCE ON SKIN

pH stands for “potential hydrogen” and is used to describe the acid-alkaline ratio of a substance, which ranges from 0 (the most acidic) to 14 (the most alkaline).

Our skin has a special feature: its surface is slightly acidic.

The surface of the skin is composed of a hydrolipid protective layer (the acid mantle) which has an average pH value of 5.5. The acidic pH value stabilizes the skin’s function as a barrier, locks in hydration, and wards off pathogens that can cause disease.

“The skin’s barrier, which is known as the acid mantle, is responsible for keeping in lipids and moisture while blocking germs, pollution, toxins, and bacteria,” explains Patricia Wexler, M.D., a New York City dermatologist.

“To work its best, the acid mantle should be slightly acidic, with a 5.5 pH balance. When it’s too alkaline, skin becomes dry and sensitive; you may even get eczema. You may also experience inflammation, which inhibits the skin’s ability to ward off matrix metalloproteinases [MMPs], the enzymes that destroy collagen and cause wrinkles and sagging.”

“There are a couple of ways [to balance it again]: by maintaining a healthy lifestyle that includes eating leafy green vegetables, citrus fruits, tomatoes, carrots, and soybeans. And, by using products that have a balanced pH level or rebalancing the pH with a toner.”

When it comes to a product that can help balance the skin’s optimal pH levels, we turn to sebamedsebamed represents one of the leading brands for medicinal skin care with a pH value 5.5 of healthy skin. All products of the sebamed range contain high-quality active ingredients which cleanse and nourish the skin without destroying the natural acid protection mantle. More than 120 scientific studies have tested the high effectiveness and very good skin compatibility of all sebamed products and confirm their skin care competence for the sensitive and problematic skin.
