How to Choose the Right Supplement?

Food should be your number one source of all the vitamins and minerals you need to sustain and improve your health. However, a poor diet will cause you to miss out on a number of essential nutrients or get amounts below the recommended dietary allowance (RDA). To fill in the gaps in your diet, you need to take a multivitamin supplement every day.

However, not all supplements are created equal; some will offer more health benefits than others. As such, you need to choose a good-quality product, the best one that will address your particular needs and deficiencies, if you have any.

Here are some useful tips that will help you shop for a natural health supplement that’s best for you:

Consult your doctor first:

Before you shop online or head to the nearest drug store or supermarket, see your doctor first.

Your healthcare provider will identify any specific problems you may have by going over your medical history, your lifestyle, and running tests if necessary. The results of any exams and the evaluation of your doctor will be instrumental in helping you choose a multivitamin ideal for your health requirements.

This is an important tip you have to follow if you’re already taking any type of medication. Your doctor will be able to recommend supplements that won’t interact with the prescription medicine you are currently on.

Examine recommended products and personal preferences:

Although this may seem like a tall order since there are hundreds of supplement brands out in the market today, you can still do this easily by going online.Use the Internet to narrow down your list of possible supplements.

Do some in-depth research on all the products you prefer. Aside from getting information from the manufacturer’s website, check sites that offer independent reviews of different supplements. If you read too many bad reviews about a certain product, cross it out from your list.

Go over the ingredients carefully:

Make sure the products you are interested in contain all the essential nutrients you are looking for. In addition, read about the form and source of every ingredient in the product. Plant-based supplements, for instance, contain healthy antioxidants and anti-inflammatory substances. As such, put plant-based products on the top of your list.

Next, check if the supplement contains fillers or additives such as artificial coloring and titanium dioxide that are not exactly healthy ingredients.

It is best to choose a food-based, organic, non-GMO multivitamin. These are products that are free of chemicals and are closer to their natural state. Natural supplements are also easier for the body to absorb.

Check the dosage:

Although it is important to choose a supplement that contains all the essential nutrients your body needs, you have to ensure they come at the recommended dosages as well.

Keep in mind that the quality of a supplement plays an important role in potency and absorb-ability while the dosage will determine whether it has a therapeutic effect. As such, check the labels carefully to ensure that you will get the recommended daily amount of all essential vitamins and minerals.

Choose a brand that is GMP-certified:

Good Manufacturing Practice or GMP is a certification that all high-quality supplements receive. This certification ensures that the product has been thoroughly tested and is safe for use.

Most natural and non-GMO supplements are GMP-certified.  However, check the label of your preferred brands to be sure it has this certification.

Don’t focus on the price:

Lastly, there is no hiding the fact that multivitamins can be expensive, especially well-known, top-notch brands. However, when buying supplements, saving money should never be your priority.

Keep in mind that many cheaper brands do not use well-researched ingredients; this means that these products are not as effective. It is always best to choose brands that have high-quality ingredients and have positive consumer reviews even if you may have to shell out more money.

If budget is an issue, look for retailers that offer discounts on bulk purchases. Even if you have to pay a bit more now, you will still save more than buying individual bottles every month or so.

Once you’ve selected your supplement, make sure you get the most from your daily intake by improving on your diet. Keep in mind that even if you are taking a multivitamin supplement, you still need to have a well-balanced diet to keep yourself healthy and well-nourished.
